clifton hill house

project roundup:

client: University of Bristol

project team: University of Bristol, Shu Architects

location: Bristol, UK

key objectives:

External repair and maintenance works to Clifton Hill House (Grade I) and Callander House (Grade II).

  • Address Deterioration: Repair weathered façades, windows, and external elements.

  • Conserve Historic Fabric: Retain and repair original features using appropriate techniques.

  • Improve Performance: Enhance thermal comfort and weather protection through targeted upgrades.

  • Extend Building Lifespan: Undertake durable repairs to support long-term use.

  • Minimal Intervention: Preserve character while limiting unnecessary replacement.

Clifton Hill House, a Grade I listed Palladian villa, together with the adjoining Callander House, forms a key part of the University of Bristol’s residential estate. Over time, exposure to the elements had led to the gradual deterioration of external fabric, affecting both appearance and performance.

This project delivers a comprehensive programme of conservation-led repairs, focused on retaining and restoring existing materials wherever possible. Timber sash and casement windows have been carefully refurbished and draught-proofed, while doors, metalwork, and external joinery have been repaired and redecorated. Localised works to stonework, render, and rainwater goods address areas of failure and help prevent further deterioration.

The approach prioritises repair over replacement, ensuring the historic character of the buildings is maintained. At the same time, subtle performance improvements enhance comfort for occupants and support the buildings’ continued use as student accommodation.

The result is a sensitive and robust maintenance scheme that restores the visual quality of these important heritage assets while securing their long-term future.
