76 Park Street

The historical changes over time had significantly impacted the property, and our challenge was to carefully and sensitively convert it, unravelling these alterations while respecting the building’s original character.

We conducted a thorough examination and audit to assess the remaining original features, studying both the current layout and the building’s original design. This process allowed us to uncover the hidden potential within this unique and neglected structure. Recognising that the building would no longer serve as a single dwelling was crucial in understanding its transformation into a more practical space.

The main challenge was sensitively converting the building into six flats suitable for modern student accommodation while preserving its historical integrity. A critical element of the design was the installation and replication of the main staircase, of which only a small portion remained. This was essential in restoring the building’s original flow and reactivating the side entrance, while also reintroducing a sense of grandeur to the space. In doing so, we were able to repair the building's floor plan, ensuring it would function effectively for modern use.

Throughout the project, we made every effort to restore the original features where possible, addressing extensive damage and bringing the building back to life. While we had hoped to remove the external paint to reveal the original finishes, the condition of the surfaces required us to apply a breathable finish instead.

Today, the building serves not only as student accommodation but also houses offices, with a charming coffee shop occupying the corner, bringing new vibrancy to the area.
